Everything that is being said about the difference between push vs pull, traditional vs social media marketing, advertising vs lead nurturing - it is all true about the new realities in your career. More and more companies will make Googling your name the first step in the hiring process. If you claim to be an expert in a given field, the companies will want to see some evidence for this online. May be you were quoted, you have a blog, or a YouTube video that you created for work. It can be a huge benefit if the Hiring Manager finds it. They will have a very public validation of the claims in your resume. Certainly something like that would increase your chances of getting the call for a job-interview.

The new career strategies are increasingly about you creating a pull for yourself as a specialist. Putting yourself out there becomes critical, especially for some areas. For example - Mike Volpe, the CMO of HubSpot said that 80% of their marketing hires had marketing experience of one year or less. Recruiters are increasingly looking for candidates who can speak 'digital' without an accent. Traditional experience is no longer an asset and in some cases could be a drawback.

So - think about what you need to do to create your Digital Brand. You will know you have succeeded when recruiters can find you before you even submit your resume for the position they are looking to fill.

But what are the ground rules when taking on such a (scary) task? Is there any one right way to do it? If only there was a school for that... Well - when in doubt - learn from the best. Once you have internet connection - you have all you need. So go out there and find out in your target area - who the most popular bloggers are, what the most popular topics are, what the most watched videos show. This should almost certainly give you some ideas where to start and what to aim for. May be it will be all totally new for you. This is good - you'll have the chance to learn what people are interested in. After some time - perhaps you will find out that you also have something to say, something to add to the discussion. Sometimes even leaving a thoughtful comment can get you noticed. The key is in using your key-board... and your mind.

The good news is - your work will accumulate over time and will bring you residual benefits. But it won't happen overnight... so go get started.

First – clearly there are wide ranging opinions about recruiters. A top recruiter and a friend of mine once jokingly said: “Recruiters are like toilet paper - when you need them, they're very useful. When you're done, you just flush them away. “ This is not exactly the case, especially with good recruiters. Good recruiters can be very helpful not just finding you a job, but with career advice, or by challenging you to perk up your resume, cover letter, coaching you for improved interview behavior and connecting you to opportunities only available to them.

So if you are considering calling a recruiter it is worth your time to shop around and find out more about the recruiter and the company he or she is working for. Typically working with up to 2-3 recruiters would be most effective. More than 3 – you may start running into trouble. It is not worth it even if you loose one opportunity just because two separate recruiters sent your resume for the same position and by doing this made you look desperate.

Second – you still need to remember that recruiters work like any other consultant from a management-consulting firm. They will defend their own interests. They want good relations with you and they need even better relations with the companies, who use their services. Because the companies are the ones paying the bill in the end – there may be some disadvantages for you or even there may be ‘hidden agendas’.

The best way to find a job is through your professional networking. It is part of the professional experience to learn how to measure your exposure to recruiters. So if you haven’t done so already – go to LinkedIn and create a professionally looking profile. Then connect to all your contacts that are already part of the network and start taking advantage of the opportunities there. LinkedIn has established itself as a primary professional networking site and I don’t see this changing in the coming years.

Third – if you find a position that you like, DO NOT call your recruiter to learn more about it. The recruiter has a vested interest to send in your resume and application, but he or she will also send all the other candidates’ resumes that are a good fit. So by telling your recruiter you may have just increased your competition.

If you really are an excellent fit for the position – do not hesitate to apply directly. This can save you time and the company will not have to pay your recruiter, which often would be to your advantage when they are making the hiring decision. So remember – the only positions you discuss with your recruiter are the ones he or she brings to your attention. (Sorry Victor!)

Control the Emotion and the Content, or what to do before you get to the first impression!

Persuasion rarely is about offering what people need. By having a deeper understanding of people's hopes, desires, expectations and so forth, persuasion makes it possible to offer what they truly want, what they dream about. In the professional setting of the job interview persuasion is about solving the hiring manager's set of problems. Typically in regards to these problems the manager has strong feelings. It could be brisk enthusiasm about the prospects of the company or frustration with the low quality of the monthly reports, or deep concern about the future of the strategic function within the division. Each and every new position comes with a job description, but what you will never find in this job description is the higher ranking problem that the manager and the company are looking to solve at the moment. Successfully guessing, or assessing what this problem might be is your first step towards assuming control over the emotion and the content of your job interview.

Fact: Linking Marketing Metrics to financial consequences is the number one issue keeping Chief Marketing Officers up at night! In other words their main concern is trying to justify their expenditures and their existence.

The first step towards a good first impression then is not just to research the company -- you will need to really immerse yourself in all the available information. You need to learn not just what it says on the company's web-site, in the latest press release or how their stock has been doing. You need to find out what is the likely leading business problem the hiring manager is concerned about. Even if your position will not be charged with solving this problem, you need to have an understanding of what is on the mind of the person you will likely be reporting to. It is a tall order and most of the time there will be no direct information to help you with this. You need to do a lot of second guessing and this is why the more educated your guessing -- the better your chances you will guess correctly. Because when you have, then you possess the key to making your best first impression and effectively executing your own agenda i.e. persuading the interviewer that you are the best candidate for the job.

Hiring Director: "So, tell me a little bit about yourself! I see you are coming from a Marketing background."

John Runner: "Yes, indeed I am and in the last 3 years I specialized in linking Marketing Metrics to financial consequences. Further I have a Babson MBA with minor in finance and 5 years of industry experience and this is why I believe I will be a perfect fit for this position."

Question 6. What Was Your Greatest Achievement and How Did You Accomplish It?

This is the heart of a behavioral job interview. This is where people prepare most and this is where it gets most personal. It is not about the team, or the department, or the company - it is about you. You need to tell the story of what you had done. So candidates who have difficulty talking about themselves and especially difficulty "bragging" about their accomplishments can be at a disadvantage. Another issue usually comes when a candidate has prepared multiple answers and does not want to limit herself to just one "greatest" achievement. In this case it may be a bit easier if she would use the count-down approach. It would go somewhat like this: "Among the top 3 thing I accomplished as a manager, was this one project, where ... Another accomplishment I am really proud of is ... And the number one accomplishment in my professional career so far is ... !"

OK - now here is what the interviewer is really trying to learn about you, when asking this question:

1. The greatest achievement question is usually pretty straight forward to answer and most recruiters are really looking for examples of past behavior as a predictor for the future employee you will be. Often the "how did you accomplish" part is omitted in the question, but make sure you give it as part of your answer. The circumstances of a simple month-end general ledger close can sometimes provide enough drama, which in turn would show how great you are.

2. Sometimes discrepancies and warning signs will pop-up and raise red flags in the mind of the recruiter so watch for relevance in your answers. If you are applying for a store manager position and tell the interviewer that your greatest accomplishment was the punk-rock CD that you produced and recorded in your basement a couple of years ago - it would be pretty obvious where your heart is.

3. What you consider an accomplishment is also another helpful way for the recruiter to tell about your business and professional goals. People tend to speak about what they like, so if for instance a candidate describes a managerial project as her greatest accomplishment, then this is usually a pretty good sign that she liked being a manager.

Question 5: How Would Your Boss Describe You?

This is another trick question and if you are not prepared - it may take you by surprise. This is the type of mind game that some job hunters thrive on, and others dread. There are recruiters that will actually first verify that your ex-boss is listed as a reference. Then they will ask the question and take notes and then would call the ex-boss to compare. But most would only ask the question as a fun way to open a discussion about personal and professional qualities. If you are not prepared though - you may not be able to see the fun in this.

OK - now here is what the interviewer is really trying to learn about you, when asking this question:

1. It is not about the ex-boss, but about how you would see yourself through the eyes of the ex-boss. It is one thing to say how you feel about yourself and it is another to say how your supervisor may have felt. It is often relatively easy for a recruiter to see if the candidate is prepared for this question or not. But preparation is not necessarily what they are looking for - it is the unique insight. I had one person say to me in an interview, when answering this question "He would probably describe me as a bit lazy!"

2. With your answer you will reveal a lot about your professional and personal value system. This is valid no matter how prepared or unprepared you are. The way you approach your answer will highlight what you think is important in terms of professional qualities and this is what the recruiter is really interested in.

3. If the interviewer sees that you are surprised by this question she would be able to see also how fast you think on your feet and how comfortable and confident you are with your message. Your confidence and quick reaction may have a bigger impact than what you say. As Marshall McLuhan put it -- the medium is the message.

Question 4: What Were Your Personal Responsibilities?

This is the real deal now. With the answer to this question you will have the opportunity to go for the touchdown ... or drop the ball altogether. This is where you describe what you did on a day-to-day basis, the projects that you owned, and the work that you put in. How do you shine here? It can be quite simple if you focus your message on achievements, on results, on the things that you changed and improved, while owning your work. Give a lot of examples and be specific. Instead of "Prepared the monthly productivity reports" you could say "Decreased by three days the preparation time for the monthly productivity reports, while in the same time increasing accuracy to 100%". You get the picture?

OK - now here is what the interviewer is really trying to learn about you, when asking this question:

1. When asking you about your prior responsibilities, the recruiter is examining in detail what kind of employee you are going to be. Will you be proud of your work (then, you would probably speak with pride about past accomplishments)? Will you be confident and assertive go-getter? Will you be a problem-solver, or merely a problem register, etc.?

2. In my experience the hiring manager will often have a mental list, or even one on paper, and will check off each of the responsibilities for the position she is looking to fill. Sometimes she would even ask clarifying questions, which could be great clues for the attentive job-hunter. If you cannot decipher anything, or prefer not to change your game plan - your best bet is preparation based on the job-description. This is why it is so important to have as much of a detailed job-description as possible. You can not do too much here and you can go as far as setting up a prior informational interview with someone in the company to help you get more information on the key responsibilities.

3. The recruiter is also interested in the overlap between your skills-set and the one needed for the position you are applying for. This would include any type of skills - from mere understanding of excel, to the finer points of the emotional intelligence required in an increasing number of places. Also - are you over or under-qualified? What is the expected learning curve?

Question 2: at This Point in Your Career What Would Be the Perfect Job For You?

Now let me start by clarifying one thing - yes, this is a trick question. Every time you hear this question you have to be able to answer without a blink: "This job is the perfect job for me!" Here is how you do this. You look at the job description and start listing down answers to the question why this job is a perfect match for your background. It is very important to list your business reasons, and not personal reasons, like "I really dig the salary for this type of job!" In addition - try to keep your answers under the section "What I can do for the company!" and avoid the section "What the company can do for me." Once you have the list of reasons 'why' then you will be able with confidence to say to the person you are interviewing with: "This job is the perfect job for me, because ...!"

OK - now here is what the interviewer is really trying to learn about you, when asking this question:

1. First she wants to know if you had done your homework. Do you really know what this job is all about? True - most job-descriptions are standard, vague and provide few specifics about the job. Yet there is enough for you to relate to. Here is another opportunity to impress by highlighting specific achievements from your background, that illustrate why this is the perfect job for you.

2. Your energy level is one measure of your enthusiasm for the job, and the answer you give to this question is the other measure. The recruiter wants to know if you truly want this job. They assume that if you do - it will show in how you approach the answer to this. If you have prepared your list with 'why this is the perfect job for you' - I can guarantee you the recruiter will like your answer.

3. Over-prepare, but don't overdo it. The recruiter will see through any cliche, or borrowed answer. It may look great on paper, but if it is not your true reason for wanting the job - better avoid it.

Question 3: at Your Last Job - Whom Did You Report to and What Was Their Position With the Company?

This is a more specific question that usually is straight-forward and requires a straight forward answer. It will give the recruiter a sense of what your relationship with your boss was. In my experience a surprising number of people make the mistake of criticizing their ex-bosses or ex-employers. Even if you have sound business reasons not to be happy with your previous position a job interview is not the right place to vent. Stay positive instead, and try to highlight the aspects of your experience with the ex-boss, that will make you a better fit for the position you are applying for.

OK - now here is what the interviewer is really trying to learn about you, when asking this question:

1. The answer to this question will help the recruiter gauge your exact position in the pecking order. Many times the title does not carry its meaning from one company to the next. In a sales-driven organization for instance a sales rep may have the title of Vice President or Director - and it is all just to give the potential clients the sense that they are working with someone high enough. At the same time in another organization a simple title like Manager or Associate, may come with a P&L responsibility, multi-million dollar budget and a team of MBAs reporting into that same manager or associate.

2. Your answer to this question will reveal your exposure level - how high in the organization you were able to reach, to have influence with your work. It makes a difference if you were reporting to one of the many directors or to the Senior VP and this is something the recruiter wants to know.

3. The recruiter will also be on alert for your criticism of your ex-boss. This is usually a good indicator for possible future attitude so like I said - it is a mistake to offer any negative information about your relationship with your boss or negative information for that boss in general. If you are talking with the hiring manager she may think "Gee, this person will leave tomorrow and criticize me in the same manner!"

How do you ace an interview that starts with a question so broad? Do you start with your most relevant background, highlight the key skills that you bring to the table? Hopefully this is the area that you have practiced the most, and these are the key things that you want to stay in the recruiter's mind. Perhaps starting this way would be a good approach, but then - isn't there a chance they perceive you as a dry, business-only type of person? May be they are looking to add someone business-savvy, but also fun ...

OK - here is what the recruiter is really trying to find out about you, when she starts with this question:

1. How eloquent and comfortable are you when communicating under the pressure of a job-interview? Do you come across as sincere, calm and composed, or do you have the "talent" to transfer your stress to everyone else in the room. We all can be a little nervous in a job interview - it is a natural reaction. You have the opportunity however to demonstrate from the start how well you can control yourself under stress.

2. It is about business, so the second thing the recruiter will notice is how quickly and how well (or if at all) you transition to your most relevant experience and why you think you are the perfect fit for the job. While broad, this question is actually a great opportunity for you to set the tone for the interview. This is the chance you are given to make a good first impression.

3. Energy level. The recruiter wants to see how enthusiastic and energetic you are about the opportunity to work for her. Even if it is a non-management position - the candidates with higher energy level are perceived to be a better fit. There is something more - your enthusiasm has to come across naturally. If you are playing the role of the enthusiastic candidate, but really feel just mildly interested, the discrepancy will show. So act naturally as much as you can, and learn how to show your enthusiasm in ways that are in harmony with who you are.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The software team of Needham & Company intends to hire a research associate. The individual will work with the software group head as part of a three person team covering application software, infrastructure and services firms. Responsibilities include: building and updating financial models, answering inbound phone calls, providing assistance in writing research reports and morning notes, listening to earnings conference calls and assisting with project-oriented work. An ability to work with speed and accuracy under time constraints is a must.

REQUIREMENTS:
The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented person who posses common sense and a demonstrated interest in the financial markets. Longer-term success requires strong verbal and written communications. The typical candidate will have recently graduated with a Bachelor's degree that included strong guidance in finance and accounting. An understanding of technology and the software business is a significant positive.

This is a full-time position in the firm's Boston, Massachusetts office. We expect the position to last for two years before the candidate attends business school. From time to time, especially talented individuals will be promoted to junior analyst instead of rotating out of the program.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Audit Analyst works on an audit team with responsibility for evaluating risks and controls, executing audit reviews, communicating issues and findings to management, devising solutions for business improvements, and following-up on corrective actions. Activities typically consist of:

Dept. of Neighborhood Development provides services and programs through five operating divisions:

The Office of Business Development (OBD) revitalizes neighborhood business districts. This Division supports the work of the City's innovative Main Streets program, the Blue Hill Avenue Initiative and the Boston Empowerment Center. It offers financial and technical assistance for existing small businesses and startups. It also assists non-profit organizations with matching capital funds to improve their facilities.

Neighborhood Housing Development (NHD) works with non-profit and for-profit partners to develop and preserve affordable housing and create neighborhood open spaces. It enhances neighborhoods by renovating abandoned properties and providing housing and services for vulnerable populations.

Real Estate Management & Sales (REMS) manages tax-foreclosed land and buildings and conveys these properties for private use as well as for housing and commercial development. REMS' Land Management Program cleans City-owned vacant land pending disposition in order to protect the public health and safety and prevent blight. The enhanced land management component transforms blighted properties with no planned redevelopment into a community open space asset, through hydroseeding, installing fences, mulching, etc.

Homeowner Services (HOS) encourages strong, stable neighborhoods by providing homeowners with financing and technical assistance to maintain and improve their homes.

Home Buyer Assistance (HBA) provides first-time home buyers with information and financing assistance.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under the direct supervision of the Controller, the incumbent will oversee the functions of the Division's Accounting/Payroll Unit. Duties include, but are not limited to: reconciling the department's financial records with the City's Peoplesoft Financial System; accounting for the amounts authorized, received and due from various Federal, State and other granting authorities; tracking of all cash receipts; preparation of all department payrolls and payroll allocations and serving as backup to the Accounting manager. Performs other related duties as required by the position.

REQUIREMENTS:
At least three (3) years of work experience in accounting and payroll is required. Experience in municipal accounting and/or grant financial management preferred. Knowledge of financial management systems, personal computers and financial software preferred. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills preferred. An intermediate level of understanding of Excel or equivalent, word processing and Access is strongly preferred. Prior experience with Access or other database management systems is helpful. A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business Administration or a related field may be substituted for two years required experience. BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED.

Pay and Hours:
Union/Grade: N-22 01, 35 Hours per week, Minimum Salary: $844.62, Maximum Salary: $1,209.82
