PMAD Intern - EPA, Federal Government, Washington, DC (2 Positions)

COMPANY DESCRIPTION:
The Water Permits Division (WPD) within the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency's Office of Wastewater Management leads and manages
the NPDES permit program in partnership with EPA Regional Offices,
states, tribes, and other stakeholders. To ensure the NPDES permit
program is effective, WPD performs a wide variety of activities,
including: shaping the direction of the national NPDES permit program;
producing policies and regulations; developing technical and
administrative tools to support permit issuance; tracking and managing
critical information related to permit issuance, permit quality, and
point source pollution abatement; overseeing the programs managed by
the States and Regional offices; and providing access to information
on NPDES permitting to promote increased awareness and involvement in
the NPDES permitting process.

Project Description and Expected Results: The Program Management,
Analysis, and Data (PMAD) Team is in the Water Permits Division (WPD)
within EPA's Office of Wastewater Management. The PMAD Team is
looking for two individuals who are interested in learning about,
supporting, and helping to shape the future direction of the NPDES
permit program. The individuals will experience, first hand, how EPA
plans and implements a national regulatory program by providing
skilled support to senior staff who are developing national policies
for program oversight, regulations, technical guidance, and electronic
tools. The interns will learn the processes and procedures used to
implement a national regulatory program. The individuals will
participate in and contribute to technical, analytical and
administrative projects that will increase the effectiveness of the
NPDES program, and will contribute to the development of selected
programmatic areas.

Position #1: The candidate will collect and analyze data on the
progress of States and EPA Regions for reducing the NPDES permit
backlog and for issuing permits identified as priority permits. The
individual may also be tasked with developing electronic tools that
will aid in the tracking and analysis of data related to reducing the
national NPDES permit backlog. The candidate will have the
opportunity to develop areas of specialization appropriate to his or
her interests and skills.

Position #2: The candidate will collect and analyze data from States
and EPA Regions in order to assess the quality of permits written and
national consistency. The individual will perform data analyses to
identify barriers to permit quality and issuance. The individual may
also be tasked with developing electronic tools that will aid in the
tracking and analysis of data related to permit quality. The
candidate will have the opportunity to develop areas of specialization
appropriate to his or her interests and skills.

Intern Qualifications and Skills: The ideal candidates should have at
least a bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental
engineering, agricultural engineering, chemistry, biology, toxicology,
public administration, information technology, or related areas, and
should demonstrate an interest in water quality, wastewater
management, watershed protection, and/or public administration. The
candidates must possess good writing and analytical skills, be
creative and technology savvy, and have the ability to work in a
fast-paced, team environment. In addition, the candidates must have
experience with the MS Office Suite of applications and comfort with a
wide variety of office computer applications, including word
processing, spreadsheets, and presentation graphics. Experience with
database development and management is recommended, but not required.

Internship Information: The appointments are for one year and may be
extended annually for up to three years. The annual stipends will be
between $36,000 and $50,000 depending on education and experience.
Housing, transportation or relocation costs will not be paid by EPA.
The internship location is at the EPA East Building, 1201 Constitution
Ave., NW, Washington, D.C. 20004. The Internship Program for EPA
Office of Water is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science
and Education (ORISE)

Associate for Program Investments & Public-Private Partnerships - The Rockfeller Foundation, New York, NY

Organization Overview:

The Rockefeller Foundation was established in 1913 by John D.
Rockefeller, Sr. to "promote the well-being" of humanity by addressing
the root causes of serious problems. With assets of more than $3
billion, it is one of the nation's largest private foundations. The
Foundation works internationally to expand opportunities for poor and
vulnerable people and to help ensure that the benefits of
globalization are shared more equitably.

The Foundation currently maintains offices in New York and San
Francisco in the United States, a study and conference center in
Bellagio, Italy, and regional offices in Bangkok, Thailand, and
Nairobi, Kenya. Annual grant-making has averaged over $140 million
per year in the past five years. The Foundation currently employs a
total workforce of 175 employees in its New York and regional offices.

A new President joined the Foundation in March 2005, and the
organization has been engaged in a strategic planning process. As
part of the restructuring associated with that process, the new
position of Vice President for Strategy and Learning was established
in May 2006, with oversight for Foundation strategic opportunities,
learning, knowledge management, impact assessment and grant
administration activities. Program-related loans, equity investments
and guarantees have been organized through an internal fund within the
foundation known as ProVenEx which is part of a newly formed Strategy
& Learning office.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Associate for Program Investments & Public-Private Partnerships
will be based in New York and be part of the Office of the Vice
President of Strategy & Learning. He/she will report to and work
directly with the officers in this area who are leading the
foundation's program investments and private sector partnerships in
furtherance of the foundation's charitable mission.

Responsibilities include:
§ Undertaking industry sector analysis, due diligence and
financial analysis of potential private sector partnerships and
program-related investment opportunities
§ Preparing investment memoranda
§ Monitoring and tracking performance of existing investments
§ Preparing and regularly updating individual and aggregate
portfolio investment reports that involve tracking carefully selected
financial and social return metrics
§ Assistance in preparing presentations to both internal and
external audience on the foundation's program investment strategy and
private sector partnerships

The Associate for Program Investments & Public-Private Partnerships
will also have the opportunity to work on grant-making programs with
the Foundation's officers in its New York as well as Nairobi and
Bangkok regional offices. One of the officers to whom the associate
would report directly is based in San Francisco.

This is an opportunity to be engaged in the front lines of structuring
innovative investments and creative partnerships that will
deliberately apply innovations to expand opportunities for health,
well-being and livelihoods throughout the world. The work will be
fast-paced and require a high level of detail orientation and
analytical capabilities. A successful candidate must be able to
prioritize, focus on end products, take initiative, and work both
independently and with teams spread out across the globe. This is
anticipated to be a two-year position and would be ideal for someone
who is contemplating a graduate degree.

Experience
B.A. or B.S. degree, with a minimum 2 years' work experience either in
management consulting, financial services, private equity or
investment banking. A strong orientation towards being responsive,
analytically rigorous and creative would be important.
